Sports Ceramic Aroma: A Fusion of Art and Athletics

Chao Yang and Yong Huang's Award-Winning Poster Series

Chao Yang and Yong Huang, along with their design team members Luxiang Li and Zhonghao Wu, embarked on this project in April 2017 in Hangzhou and completed it in August of the same year. The posters were then exhibited in Jingdezhen in April 2019. The city of Jingdezhen, renowned globally for its ceramic artistry, served as the inspiration for this design project. The designers aimed to represent the city's thousands of years of ceramic culture in conjunction with the spirit of sports.

The unique aspect of these posters lies in their fusion of sports symbols with elements of ceramic culture, thereby conveying urban culture and sports aesthetics. The designers utilized representative crafts of Jingdezhen ceramic culture, such as blue and white porcelain and color glaze, and merged these with various sports symbols. The result is a visually stunning representation of the city's heritage and the athletic event it hosted.

The process of creating these posters involved the use of photography technology to capture images of ceramic works of art. These images were then edited and synthesized using Photoshop. The final product was realized through digital printing technology, with each poster measuring 700 mm x 1000 mm.

The challenge faced by the designers was translating ceramic works of art into poster design. However, their innovative approach and creative solutions led to a successful fusion of these two distinct elements. The result is a series of posters that not only promote the Jiangxi Provincial Games but also celebrate the rich ceramic culture of Jingdezhen.

Their efforts were recognized when they were awarded Silver in the A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, and that evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
